Why open one
Your host family can pay pocket money without international fees, and you avoid charges every time you pay by card or withdraw cash.
What you'll need
In countries like Germany you'll register your address first; in Australia you'll want a Tax File Number for any paid work.
- Passport and visa or residence permit
- Proof of address — often a registration certificate or letter from your host family
- Sometimes a local tax or ID number
Quick options
Many au pairs open an app-based account before arriving, so they can receive money from day one, then switch to a local bank once registered. Ask your host family to help with the appointment — it goes much faster with a local speaker.
